Josh Shaw, University of Southern California (USC) senior cornerback, injured both ankles after jumping from a second-story balcony to save his 7-year-old nephew from drowning in a pool, The Huffington Post reported.
Shaw’s injuries have sidelined him for an indefinite amount of time. After landing on the concrete, he sprained both of his ankles and then crawled to the pool to pull out his nephew. However, the ankle sprains are a small price to pay in order to help someone else in need.
“I would do it again for whatever kid it was, it did not have to be my nephew,” said Shaw. “My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by best trainers and doctors in the world. I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible.”
The incident occurred at an apartment complex in Palmdale, CA while shaw was attending a family function, according to a USC press release. Students and members of USC’s athletic department alike have heralded Shaw’s actions.
“That was a heroic act by Josh, putting his personal safety aside,” said USC coach Steve Sarkisian. “But that’s the kind of person he is. It is unfortunate that he’ll be sidelined for a while and we will miss his leadership and play, but I know he’ll be working hard to get back on the field as soon as possible.”
Shaw’s career at USC has been stellar. In his years with the Trojans, Shaw has recorded 97 tackles (7.5 tackles for loss), 13 deflections, and six interceptions in 21 starts. He has been considered one of USC’s best and most versatile defensive backs, starting at cornerback and free safety.
