Kenneth “Buddy” Barfield, former campaign manager for Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, pleaded guilty today to embezzling nearly $2 million from Dewhurst’s 2012 U.S. Senate campaign, reported the Houston Chronicle.

Republicans seem to always find a way to rob their fellow Americans blind.

Other than embezzlement, Barfield also pleaded guilty to wire fraud and filing a false tax return while appearing before a federal judge. If convicted, then Barfield faces up to 28 years in prison, seven years supervised release, and fines of an untold amount.

For four years, Barfield skimmed money from Dewhurst’s campaign donations, converting $162,000 in political donations into $25,000 for himself. Barfield confessed that he used the money to pay his mortgage, his kids’ college tuition, and spent some on personal costs.

The scheme involved Barfield inflating and faking invoices to himself for consulting work. The payments were then approved through checks and electronic transfers to his company, Alexander Group Consulting, the Houston Chronicle further noted. The scam eventually caught up with him in December 2012.

Other advisers working with Dewhurst noticed missing funds from Dewhurst’s accounts. They found the fake invoices and totaled the missing amount to $1.3 million; however, an audit confirmed that $1.8 million was missing.

After his guilty plea, U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Lane told Barfield that “You simply do not want to know what your sentence will be.” Needless to say, Barfield’s greedy actions have gotten him into big trouble. Barfield will appear before a judge at a later date to receive his punishment.
