Election Day is next week, and Republicans have an uncomfortable lead in the polls as they are expected to win the Senate. If that happens, analyst Lee Fang outlined how that could weaken the Left’s fight against climate-change deniers.
Fang asserted that if the Republicans seize control of the Senate, then they stand to take over key committees that are otherwise vital to instilling proper climate change measures. For instance, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) is in the hunt to take over the Environment and Public Works Committee as chair. That will give him power over the Environmental Protection Agency.
Inhofe has said he will pursue regulators regarding greenhouse gases, methane leaks, and loosen regulations over coal-fire plants.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) could become the chairman of the Subcommittee on Science and Space, and it would be an absolute trainwreck if that happened. Cruz blatantly denies climate change and says that the “data are not supporting what the advocates are arguing.” Cruz couldn’t be anymore wrong about climate change. He’s probably the worst out of all the Repubs.
The Budget Committee is in danger of getting hijacked by the conservatives, too. Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY) sees the climate debate as wasteful spending and will surely dismantle any funding used for emission regulation. Enzi could likely defund the EPA, Fang reported.
This is what we’re looking at: a group of science deniers whose relationship with the energy industry guides their thoughts instead of their brains. If they win this, it’s going to be a long two years.
