Kenya Harris, of Albany, Georgia, filed a lawsuit against the Albany Police Department asserting that in 2011 an officer severely beat her, causing Harris to have a miscarriage, reported Crooks and Liars.
According to the lawsuit, Harris arrived at the Albany Police Department to pick up her son, a minor, who was arrested earlier that day in 2011. After waiting several hours for her son, she told Albany officer Ryan Jenkins that she had to leave to tend to her other children. Certainly frustrated, Harris may have not been extremely pleasant, understandably.
“Defendant Officer Jenkins stated that he did not appreciate the tone in which she was communicating with him, and further stated that if she continued he would take her head and ‘put it to the floor,’” asserted the lawsuit.
Police officers have no power over someone who may be speaking in a less-than-friendly tone. Speaking strongly is not a crime, but this power-tripping hotheaded officer saw fit to overpower and assault a pregnant woman because he didn’t “appreciate the tone” Harris used.
This sounds like some overly-sensitive weakling of a cop who couldn’t take a woman speaking to him in a strong tone. The lawsuit further stated that:
Defendant Officer Jenkins, without provocation, grabbed the plaintiff, who weighs less than one hundred twenty pounds, by her neck and slammed her to the ground. Plaintiff momentarily blacked out and came to with Defendant Officer Jenkins sitting on her back, and with his knee on her arm. Plaintiff was pregnant at the time. . .
With malice, defendants Officer Jenkins and with the compliance of Officer Brown, repeatedly slammed Ms. Harris, causing her severe physical harm and the loss of her baby, when less force was required and should have been used.
After the attack, Harris asked for medical attention, which the officers denied, of course, arrested for obstruction, and jailed for the night.
Over-aggressive cops, despite what conservatives might say, are a rampant problem and a cancer in American society. There too many police in the country who abuse their power, using it as a license to kill.
