Thanks to the Weather Channel’s most famous meteorologist Jim Cantore, the weather phenomenon of thundersnow has gained some national attention.
Thundersnow is pretty rare. Although certain areas of the country are more prone to experience it than others, less than one percent of snowstorms are accompanied by thundersnow. For it to happen, a mass of cold air needs to be on top of warm air with moist air near the ground.
One of the effects of global warming is more extreme weather patterns, so this phenomenon might start becoming more common.
Covering this latest winter storm near Boston, Cantore was able to capture thundersnow — along with his childlike excitement — on camera.
