Yesterday, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK), chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, used the dumbest argument there is to deny climate change: It’s cold outside, so therefore global warming isn’t real.
Showing his stupidity by not being able to tell the difference between climate and weather, Inhofe seriously brought a snowball onto the Senate floor.
“Do you know what this is?” he asked. “It’s a snowball. It’s just from outside here, so it’s very, very cold out … very unreasonable.”
“We hear the perpetual headline that 2014 has been the warmest year on record, but now the script has flipped,” Inhofe continued.
Inhofe was right on that point; 2014 was the hottest year since modern record keeping began. What he seems to not understand, however, is that one of the effects of climate change is extreme and irregular weather patterns. A quick look at the record-breaking snowfall blanketing much of the country proves that point. Also, a few extremely cold days in the winter doesn’t the change fact that the overall global temperature is hotter than we’ve ever been able to record.
