Tony Perkins is the leader of, what the Southern Poverty Law Center has deemed, an “anti-gay hate group,” known as the Family Research Council. Perkins appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation yesterday to find that not even mainstream Christians support his insane ideologies, reported RawStory.
“The Southern Poverty Law Center has branded the Family Research Council an anti-gay hate group,” said host Bob Schieffer. “We have been inundated by people who say we should not even let you appear because they, in their view – quote – you don’t speak for Christians.”
Perkins and the rest of his like-minded minions are bracing themselves for the Supreme Court decision of whether or not same-sex marriage is a constitutional right. Perkins believes the issue should be of no concern to the Supreme Court because “it does a disservice to both sides if the court weighs in on public policy like this.”
Perkins is incorrect. The Supreme Court absolutely has jurisdiction over this issue. The Court’s place in this debate is no less valid than its place during the Civil Rights Movement in the mid-20th century.
“The courts are decided [sic] to interpret the Constitution and the constitutionality of laws, not to create public policy,” said Perkins. “When they do that, they create division and they erect barriers to reaching consensus on public policy like this. So no, we stand with millennia of experience that the union of a man and a woman – the sacred union of marriage – is the cornerstone of a society.”
Perkins’ rambling is incoherent at best. Deciding the constitutionality is exactly what the Supreme Court is doing. Perkins is trying to spin the issue to make it seem like the Court is creating laws out of thin air. He is missing the point entirely.
Evan Wolfson of the Freedom to Marry advocacy group also appeared on Face the Nation and described Perkins as he truly is.
“I would say that Tony Perkins is really an outlier,” said Wolfson. “And what’s to be celebrated here is that the vast majority of Americans have opened their hearts and changed their mind and moved forward to embrace the freedom to marry. And the courts are following where that public opinion has gone.”
