It’s been five months since the Senate Intelligence Committee made its damning report on the CIA’s post-9/11 torture program public. If Republicans have their way, someone will finally be held accountable.

It will just be one of the Senate staffers who was instrumental in the publishing of the torture report.

Her name is Alissa Starzak and she is the former Democratic majority staffer for the Senate Intelligence committee. She was one of the lead investigators of the infamous torture report.

Starzak is now nominated to serve as general counsel for the army and Republicans aren’t happy about it. Senate Intelligence Committee Chair RIchard Burr (R-N.C.) is working hard to prevent and stall Starzak’s nomination.

From Huffington Post:

Burr confirmed to The Huffington Post that he is working to keep the former investigator from getting approved by the Senate.

Republicans have prevented Starzak’s confirmation before. Despite a swift approval from the Armed Services Committee (led by Democrats at the time), Senate Republicans failed to confirm her. The White House has now resubmitted Starzak for approval.

It’s obvious that Republicans are hurt that the torture report ever came to light. They’d just rather make a scapegoat of a public servant doing her job diligently and effectively than actually serve the public’s interest. That’s why they’ll never push for any of the parties responsible for the torture that the report exposed. Instead, they’ll just continue to shoot the messenger.
