While Baltimore remains in a state of unrest over race-related issues, a Texas lawmaker is using the turmoil to bolster his anti-gay agenda, reported Salon.

According to Rep. Bill Flores (R-TX), the riots in Baltimore aren’t because of the unfair treatment of black people, they happened because the Supreme Court is deliberating the constitutionality of same-sex marriage. How Flores managed to conflate the two issues is anyone’s guess.

Flores told Washington Watch, a radio platform for insane conservatives, that same-sex marriage causes the “breakdown of the family” and leads to poverty which is what caused the events in Baltimore. The protests and riots have nothing to do with police brutality and racism, it has to do with gay people, he said.

“The single best indicator of whether or not a child is going to be in poverty or not is whether or not they were raised by a two-parent household or a single-parent household,” said Flores. “And so the breakdown of the family has contributed to poverty.”

Flores continued.

“You look at what’s going on in Baltimore today … you see issues that are raised there. And healthy marriages are the ones between a man and a woman, because they can have a healthy family and they can raise children in the way that’s best for their future — not only socially, but psychologically, economically, from a health perspective. There’s just nothing like traditional marriage that does that for a child.”

This sort of incorrect commentary on serious issues is dangerous. Flores attempted to warp the narrative for self-serving reasons. Same-sex marriage has nothing to do with Baltimore. That saddest thing here is that some people heard this and probably took it as truth.
