Florida Senator Marco Rubio believes that Christianity is under attack in America. According to the Republican presidential hopeful, same sex marriage is threatening to erode Christian values, which could then lead to classifying the teachings of the Catholic Church and other sects of Christianity as hate speech.
Rubio’s comments reflect his inner bigotry, a trait that won’t come in handy in the 2016 election.
What Rubio is trying to do is to re-ignite the culture wars in America. By throwing out issues of religion and same sex marriage, Rubio is hoping to gain the hardcore religious bigot vote. And sadly, that is a good chunk of the Republican base.
These are low information, fear-based, anti-change voters who are easily manipulated into believing that their way of life is under attack from things like same sex marriage or even abortion. The truth is that none of these issues will have any affect whatsoever on their personal lives. They will maintain all of the same freedoms that they have ever had, they’ll just be extending those same privileges to a part of the population that is being unfairly repressed because politicians have misinterpreted and cherry picked information from The Bible.
But the biggest problem with these voters that Rubio is pandering to is that they don’t realize how badly they are being manipulated. Think about this: George W Bush campaigned on issues like combatting gay marriage and abortion. He wrapped himself in the Bible, and promised to return America to a mythical Christian origin.
So after 8 years of Bush as president – and four years of Republican majorities in both Houses as well as a Republican-controlled Supreme Court – Basically, the entire country run by right wing Republicans for several consecutive years – has anything changed on these culture war issues? Did they pass a Constitutional Amendment banning same sex marriage? Did they issue legislation outlawing all abortions in America? Did they make English the official language of the United States? No, they did absolutely nothing about any of these issues that they campaigned on, because they were only buzzwords to drive crazy conservative voters to the polls.
It worked beautifully for Republican politicians, and I can almost guarantee you that none of those Republican voters ever took the time to think about the fact that not one of those promises was kept. The country kept moving forward and left the bigots behind.
Marco Rubio hopes voters don’t realize they are being manipulated, and that’s why he’s out there selling nonsense about a make believe attack on religious freedom.
Here’s a message for Senator Rubio – bigotry disguised as religion is still bigotry.
