Presidential candidate Donald Trump said some really offensive things about Mexico in his candidacy announcement. Mexican officials have now responded to Trump’s idiotic statements, reported GlobalPost.
“They are not our friend, believe me . . . When Mexico sends its people, it is not sending its best,” said Trump. “They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems. . . . They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”
Trump speaks as if the Mexican government created a program to send immigrants to America in order to weaken us. That’s an Alex Jones-level conspiracy theory, good thing Trump has absolutely no chance of getting elected president. Trump also said that there needs to be a huge wall built along the America-Mexico border and that Mexico should pay for it.
After Trump’s announcement had time to sink in, Mexican officials spoke out.
Trump has “a profound ignorance of the reality in Mexico and the migrant contribution to [US] society,” said Mexican Foreign Secretary Jose Antonio Meade. Trump’s words “reflect prejudices . . . a politician that does not know reality does not have good prospects.”
Other officials chimed in, as well.
“The worst scenario for a politician is to fool themselves about reality, and the reality is that Mexicans contribute significantly to the society and economy of the United States,” said Sergio Alcocer, Mexican undersecretary for North America.
Shots fired, and Trump has been a candidate for less than a week.
GlobalPost noted that Mexico is America’s largest trading partner after Canada. Last year, America exported $240 billion in goods to Mexico and received $294 billion in goods from Mexico.
This is not the way to create a campaign. But, there is the possibility that Trump declared candidacy for theater. He did pay “actors” $50 each to attend his candidacy announcement. If he is serious, then his foreign relations platform is off to a horrendously awful start.
