Whether it be the Internet or hip-hop music, old white people talking about things they don’t, and never will understand, is common on Fox News. Geraldo Rivera, Fox News contributor, expressed that misunderstanding when he criticized musician Kendrick Lamar’s performance at the BET Awards, reported RawStory.
Hip-Hop began as an expression from the black community about the woes and hardships of living in America’s ghettos. Lamar’s recent performance was his expression of concern with the recent unwarranted killings of blacks by law enforcement officers. Lamar rapped, “We hate the po-po, wanna kill us dead in the street fo sho,” while performing on top of a vandalized police car.
In response to Lamar’s performance, Rivera declared: “This is why I say that hip-hop has done more damage to young African-Americans than racism in recent years.”
Rivera is nowhere near an expert on black culture. Lamar’s message is that of current events in black culture, and his attempt at trying to explain to young Americans (black and white) what they are feeling, and the need for change. It isn’t Hip-Hop that has caused police officers to kill black Americans, it’s racism.
