The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that Republican presidential candidates Jeb Bush and Donald Trump are in a dead heat, with Bush in a miniscule lead. If these two are the frontrunners, the GOP hardly stands a chance in the 2016 presidential race. Any Democratic candidate should be able to easily beat either one.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll has former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush polling at 16.1 percent. Trump, a billionaire real estate mogul, trails slightly at 15.8 percent. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie polled a distant third with 9.5 percent, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who was supposed to be a GOP favorite, polled at 5.8 percent.
Reuters reported, however, that if given a choice between Bush, Trump, and Republican Florida Gov. Marco Rubio, 42 percent of Republican voters would rather have Bush in the White House. Trump came nowhere close to Bush, winning only 28 percent of pollers. If Trump did somehow win the Republican nomination, the GOP is in more trouble than anyone could have expected.
After lambasting minorities and several Establishment Republicans, many in those groups have washed their hands of Trump. NBC, Univision, Macy’s, and NASCAR are among the several businesses that severed all ties with Trump after he launched a hateful tirade against Mexicans and Mexican immigrants.
Judging by the crop of Republican presidential candidates, the party doesn’t have a lot to choose from. Bush comes from a tainted legacy that he’d have to sell his soul to overcome. Donald Trump is just a walking circus act.
