The United States Supreme Court’s approval rating among conservatives is at an all-time low, while liberals are overwhelmingly supportive of the Supreme Court, reported the Washington Post. This is noteworthy because the Supreme Court has been appointed mostly by Republican presidents for decades.
According to a new Gallup poll, Republican approval of the Supreme Court is only 18 percent. Democratic support is at its highest ever, 76 percent. The Post noted that this difference of opinion is the widest in Gallup’s history. Extreme Right-wingers like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) accuse the mostly-Republican court of purposely siding with President Barack Obama. Cruz said that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts wears “an Obama jersey.”
These poll numbers come as the Supreme Court takes its annual summer recess. The Court recently declared that same-sex marriage is a constitutional right. Evangelicals and Republicans were beside themselves after that ruling. They said the country was falling apart and even questioned the Court’s purpose.
Some said the Supreme Court should be dismantled. However, conservatives don’t complain when the Supreme Court rules in their favor. In response to the GOP’s anti-gay meltdown, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said “when the Supreme Court’s decisions served the Republicans’ political interests, I heard nothing about [curbing its power].”
Despite the Republican call to gut the Supreme Court, the Court isn’t exceeding its power. Of course, there are instances that the Court serves corporate interests over the people’s interests. But, like Leahy said, no one ever hears liberals demanding the Supreme Court be dismantled when it makes a conservative-favored decision.
