An unlikely pair has emerged on Capitol Hill as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich came together in their support for increased funding for disease research programs, reported The Hill.
“Three cheers to Speaker Trump,” said Warren. The former speaker said this week that one of the “most fiscally responsible steps we can take” in America is to increase funding for Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and cancer research. Gingrich also noted that among his biggest regrets from his time as Speaker in the 90s is that he didn’t triple funding for the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Warren and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) have both supported the NSF, the National Institutes of Health, and the Food and Drug Administration. They invited Gingrich to address funding of these research organizations in an attempt to create a bipartisan dialogue. Gingrich has advocated disease research for his entire political career.
“From a fiscal as well as a human perspective, finding cures for these diseases is urgent,” said Gingrich. “We are right at the edge of breakthroughs right now.”
With Washington being so divided these days, it’s pretty refreshing when two people from opposing parties reach across the aisle and agree on something intended to make lives better.
