Many television pundits have tried to highlight similarities between the campaigns of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Donald Trump, but Sanders made it clear that he and Trump are nothing alike, reported CBS News.
Sanders appeared on Meet the Press with Chuck Todd and noted the starkest difference between him and Trump. “I’m not a billionaire. My family doesn’t have a whole lot of money,” said Sanders. “We are raising our campaign contributions from 350,000 people, who are contributing, Chuck, on average $31.20 apiece.”
Trump arrived in Iowa via is private $7 million helicopter in what CBS News described as a “blatant display of wealth.” Sanders, who also was in Iowa, took a jab at Trump and joked that he “left the helicopter at home.” He added that “It’s in the garage” because he “forgot to bring it.”
Also unlike Trump, Sanders has drawn well over 20,000 people to single events in Seattle, Portland, and Los Angeles. Trump speaks to a fraction of that, only to showcase his absurd, 1 percenter lifestyle. Trump’s boisterous rich guy persona has him leading the field of 17 Republican candidates. Sanders is second in the polls behind opponent Hillary Clinton in a sparse Democratic race, although vice president Joe Biden is rumored to be contemplating a 2016 run. Sanders acknowledged Biden’s potential run.
“I have known Joe for many, many years. Everybody who knows Joe likes him and respects him. The decision as to whether he runs is his,” said Sanders. “If he does run, I promise him an issue-oriented campaign. We’ll debate the major issues facing the American people.”
