Bernie Sanders has called out Ben Carson for his demeaning statements that a Muslim should not be president.
“You know, this is the year 2015,” said Sanders. “You judge candidates for president not on their religion, not on the color of their skin, but on their ideas, on what they stand for.”
Carson had stated to NBC’s Chuck Todd on Sunday that he felt Muslim values are “inconsistent with the values and principles of America.”
“I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that,” said Carson.
Bernie Sanders expressed his distaste for Carson’s comments on Twitter.
“I am very disappointed that Dr. Carson would suggest that a Muslim should not become president of the United States,” Sanders said in a tweet.
“It took us too long to overcome the prejudice against electing a Catholic or an African-American president,” Sanders continued.
“People should be elected to office based on their ideas, not their religion or the color of their skin,” Sanders said.
