On Wednesday, Republican Representative Paul Gosar sent out a fundraising email that held up his boycott of Pope Francis as a reason he deserved campaign contributions.
“I’m the conservative Congressman who boycotted Pope Francis’ address to Congress because I believe when a Pope chooses to act and talk like a leftist politician, then he can expect to be treated like one,” the message reportedly reads. “I need conservatives like you in my corner as I come under unprecedented attacks for taking this principled stand.”
Gosar pointed to media reactions to his decision to boycott Pope Francis’ speech as signs that conservatives should support him.
“You can count on the Obama political fundraising machine to come out against me in full force,” the email says.
Gosar hoped to raise $25,000 by the middle of this week.
“You may have noticed that the liberal media has embraced this Pope unlike none other in our time … reinforcing an almost rock-star status never before seen for the leader of the Catholic Church,” he said.
“Unlike his predecessors – who focused on issues of religious extremism, abortion and traditional values, Pope Francis has instead given up his chance to make a significant impact on these policies,” Gosar said. “Unfortunately, he chose to pander to the liberal left.”
