Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has his American history mixed up. He said that the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance and the motto “In God We Trust” is solid proof that America was founded as a Christian nation. The motto was adopted in 1956, and “under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954.

“A lot of people have said to me: ‘Why are you willing to get into this fray when you had such a wonderful career and reputation and you were blessed financially and you could just sit back and relax?’” said Carson.

“The pledge of allegiance to our flag says we are one nation under God,” he added. “Many courtrooms in the land on the wall says ‘In God We Trust.’ Every coin in our pocket, every bill in our wallet says ‘In God We Trust.’”
