The state of Texas is going to eliminate taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood because of “concerns” regarding the agency’s policy towards fetal tissue donations.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced that Texas is ceasing Medicaid’s participation with Planned Parenthood. Any Planned Parenthood clinics in the state of Texas will no longer receive Medicaid funding. Republicans are still riding the wave of fear and misinformation generated by the Planned Parenthood videos.

“Following the release of gruesome videos filmed at Planned Parenthood facilities, including Gulf Coast in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott announced his LIFE Initiative to provide greater protections for children in the womb and prevent the sale of baby body parts,” said Abbott’s official statement.

Abbott’s assertion that Planned Parenthood “sold” fetal tissue is wrong. The agency donated the specimens and only ever received payment to reimburse costs. On October 13, Planned Parenthood announced that it will cease the practice altogether to avoid any controversy.

Texas’ elimination of Planned Parenthood funding is reckless conservative behavior at its worst. Because of it, thousands of women will be left without vital care.
