The New York Police Union has been calling for a boycott of Quentin Tarantino’s films after he spoke at a rally in protest of police brutality.
The call for a boycott came after Tarantino spoke about the militarization of police and of the increased prevalence of racial profiling at a protest on October 24. Tarantino referred to cops who he felt were a part of this profiling and violence as “murderous” and demanded that the offending officers be brought to justice.
The union responded by attempting to discredit Tarantino based on the content of his films. A major theme of most of Tarantino’s films is an incredibly stylized hyper-violent aesthetic.
Tarantino had this to say regarding the proposed boycott:
“Instead of dealing with the incidents of police brutality that those people were bringing up, instead of examining the problem of police brutality in this country, better they single me out.”
“Frankly, it feels lousy to have a bunch of police mouthpieces call me a cop hater. I’m not a cop hater. That is a misrepresentation. That is slanderous. That is not how I feel.”
The illustrious filmmaker who has won multiple Oscars and other accolades for his films is set to release his eighth picture this Christmas. Those who support Mr. Tarantino’s efforts both personally and professionally should make sure to check the film out, if only to show support for the idea that our police systems are badly in need of reform, and that a police-driven boycott of a fictional film will not silence those who speak out against the very real violence being perpetrated by police.
