If most news networks and Republican presidential candidates are to be believed, the U.S. refugee vetting process is woefully unprepared to screen out terrorists in a sea of refugees (or rabid dogs, or a sack of peanuts, or a bowl of cherries as The GOP is a big fan of metaphor).
The reality is much more calming, though, as the vetting process for refugees in particular is one of the most rigorous in the world. There are much simpler ways to gain access to the country, so the chances of a terrorist going through an 18-month minimum process in order to get refugee status is minimal at best.
