If this were the sort of soundbites we were hearing from Mitt Romney in 2012, he might actually have had a chance at winning.
Mitt Romney has recently come out strongly in favor of an increase in the minimum wage, saying during an interview with The Washington Post that the Republican party is “nuts” to keep the minimum wage at its current low level.
“I think we’re nuts not to raise the minimum wage. I think as a party, to say we’re trying to help the middle class of America and the poor and not raise the minimum wage sends exactly the wrong signal.”
“As a party we speak a lot about deregulation and tax policy, and you know what? People have been hearing that for 25 years and they’re getting tired of that message.”
Welcome to the rational side, Mitt. Democrats and other like-minded folks have known for years that a refusal to pay the lowest level of workers anything resembling a fair wage was a pretty dirty way to say that the poor and middle classes matter and deserve better treatment.
Too bad for Mitt though, as his comments are much too little too late. He and other more rational Republicans see their party quickly disappearing in a cloud of smoke and what will rise from those ashes is anyone’s guess.
The Republican party who has always been able to depend on the uneducated white male vote is seeing that demographic shrinking year by year. That particular minority is no longer enough to win a race, and the current extreme shift in the party is only hurting their chances of gaining educated, minority, or women voters.
