Senator Bernie Sanders spoke in South Carolina on Tuesday, discussing important issues to the state like education for all and easy voting access for minorities and the disabled.
Sanders directly addressed those politicians who actively worked to suppress voter turnout, particularly for those who are in poverty. Sanders said that it never occurred to him to try to suppress the votes of those Americans who may not agree with him, but that is the thought process of some.
To those people, Sanders sent a clear message:
“If you are afraid of a free and fair Democracy, get out of politics and get another job.”
Sanders then went on to talk about the importance of an educated populace, and the appropriate timing of implementing free college education for Americans.
It is no secret that Republican efforts to block voter fraud is really a thinly veiled attempt to suppress voters who might not support Republican ideals. Requirements like having a valid form of I.D. to vote is an unnecessary extra step which affects people who do not have the time or money to apply for an I.D.. Actual instances of voter fraud are extremely rare if they exist at all. In fact, recently a Republican woman was arrested after she attempted to expose voter fraud and was quickly caught, showing that the current system is effective and accessible.
The South Carolina Democratic primary will be held on Saturday, February 27.
