Democrats Abroad is a DNC-approved organization which collects votes and hosts primary events for American Democrats all over the world. They held their primary event earlier this month, but have just announced the results of their primary on Monday where Bernie Sanders was hailed the victor.
In a turnout of 34,570 Democrats living abroad all over the world, 69 percent voted for Senator Bernie Sanders while 31 percent went to Hillary Clinton.
The Democratic National Committee gives Democrats Abroad 13 delegates, which means that Sanders has gained 9 delegates while Clinton gains 4. Democrats Abroad also have eight Superdelegates. Among these, three are committed to Clinton while one goes to Sanders. The remaining four are as of yet unaffiliated.
It is not surprising that the bulk of ex-pat Americans would go to Bernie Sanders as Europe is much more liberal than America, making Sanders’s policies not just familiar, but preferable.
For example, Americans living in Sweden would be able to see firsthand the type of Democratic socialism from which Sanders is modeling his platform.What Sanders is asking Americans to accept may be revolutionary in the states, but it is often par for the course in other places in the world.
