Just days before the New York Democratic Debate, Senator Bernie Sanders will take an impromptu trip to the Vatican to speak about creating a moral economy. The announcement was unwittingly made on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” by Mika Brzezinski who was nonchalantly reading off a few talking points about Sanders when she stumbled upon the news.
“How did this come about?” Brzezinski asked incredulously.
“It was an invitation from the Vatican,” Sanders said to a stunned round-table of pundits.
“You know that’s pretty good? That’s kind of impressive.”
The entire tone of the interview was bizarre, and it is easy to see that if Clinton were the one with this news they would be standing on their chairs to applaud her.
True to form, Sanders remained humbled and expressed his surprise and gratitude at the invitation. Sanders told the “Morning Joe” crew that while people may consider him to be extreme in his political views, much of what Pope Francis has been saying during his tenure is much more extreme.
Of course, this is a massive honor for Sanders and a strong positive push for the candidate who still struggles to remain competitive in the primary race. The White House may defend Clinton and offer their unspoken support, but if Sanders has the increasingly popular Pope behind him, it will be a much closer race.
