Now that all of the other feckless competitors have retreated from the Republican race with their tails between their legs, the Republican party must now face the absolutely truth of a Donald Trump general election.
The day after the Indiana primary, with Cruz and Kasich no more than a distant memory, the party leaders and voices began to fracture. Some stuck to the #NeverTrump movement, while others shifted to the more inclusive #NeverTrumpNeverHillary. Many more simply said they would support the nominee, or that they would vote for Trump but not endorse him. Others who have been behind Trump all along gleefully boasted about their victory. Many simply sat silent, unsure of what side of the terrible mess to roll down.
But inside the official party machine, things were much more strict. Staffers of the Republican National Committee were told that if they felt unable to support and represent Trump that they should consider leaving.
A New York Times article reports that “Some staff members at the Republican National Committee were told Wednesday that if they were unable to get behind the nominee, they should leave by the end of the week.”
For those unlucky souls, they must pit their conscience against their need for a paycheck and even future political prospects. It’s certainly not an easy position to be in for any Republican, but it is simply the next step in piecing together their fractured party.
