Even in 2016, Republican lawmakers feel the need to obscure and ignore the realities that LGBT individuals face in daily life, even when they are murdered in cold blood for their sexual orientation.

In interviews on Sunday morning, Florida Governor Rick Scott was unable to acknowledge that the victims of the Orlando massacre were largely homosexual, effectively erasing an important element of the attack.

As more details emerge, it is becoming completely clear that what occurred was not just a terrorist attack but a targeted hate crime. Though religious affiliations and gun access come into play, the victims died while celebrating their sexuality in a safe gay-inclusive space. They were targeted for their sexuality by a man who took offense to two men kissing. It is as simple as that.

You can expect to see a great deal of this from Republican lawmakers as they politicize every aspect of this tragedy while ignoring the massive associations with the LGBT community.

This man wasn’t merely trying to murder people, he was trying to murder gay people. This was a hate crime and it is disgusting that the governor of Florida refuses to accept that some of his constituents were killed simply for who they loved.
