U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley announced in an email on Friday that 33 Democratic senators now back a public option being added to Obamacare. Democrats have started more loudly calling for a public option as major private insurers have pulled out of ObamaCare marketplaces and left parts of the country with only one provider to choose from. But not all Democrats have jumped on board – Senator Heidi Heitkamp for instance is holding out support – and she said in July that “I think it’s critically important that we stop trying to complicate healthcare and we start taking a look at what needs to be fixed in Obamacare.” Will this help the Democrats in down-ballot elections by giving progressives and first time voters something to vote for?
