It hardly seems possible considering everything that has happened in the 2016 election, but shockingly as we head into the first presidential debate this evening, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are at nearly a dead heat.
Though polls have been wonky for months now, this evening we will see two candidates fighting for their lives on the debate stage, neither able to rest comfortably on an electorate lead. This means that the stakes are at an all-time high, putting an already vital performance in the category of “must see.”
This latest poll comes from a collaboration between The Washington Post and ABC News which shows Clinton holding a slight lead at 46 percent to Trump’s 44 percent in likely voters. Johnson and Stein also have a small portion of that vote. Though Clinton is two points ahead, it is well within the poll’s 4.6 point margin of error. This means that though Clinton has been given a slight lead, it’s truly anyone’s game at this point.
Depending on the outcome of tonight’s debate, those numbers could change dramatically in either way as each candidate fights to make themselves seem far superior.
We won’t know until this evening where tomorrow’s polls will be headed.
