Speaking to his constituents on the week of thanksgiving, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio made a pledge to those minority groups residing within the city limits: we will protect you.
de Blasio listed off several likely scenarios for the next four years under President Trump and in each instance, also described how the city would fight against and refuse to follow through on discriminatory and dangerous policy.
The mayor of one of the most diverse cities in the nation assured his city that “a single election does not change who we are.”
“Here’s my promise to you as your mayor: we will use all the tools at our disposal to stand up for our people. If all Muslims are required to register, we will take legal action to block it. If the federal government wants our police officers to tear immigrant families apart, we will refuse to do it. If the federal government tries to deport law-abiding New Yorkers who have no representation, we will step in, we will work and build on the work of the city council to provide these New Yorkers with the lawyers they need to protect them and their families.”
The mayor continued this list, stating that the city would refuse to comply with an order to resume stop-and-frisk.
“We won’t trade in neighborhood policing for racial profiling.”
The city would also protect Planned Parenthood and funding for women’s health at their own expense if needed.
If minority or religious groups are attacked, the city will find their attackers and bring them to justice.
Mayor de Blasio’s speech is an encouraging one, and one that we wish to hear from more liberal elected officials all over this nation. If we can do what de Blasio says we are capable of, then there is no fearing a Donald Trump presidency.
