On Thursday, the people of North Carolina made their voices heard when they stormed the state’s capitol in Raleigh to demand that the state Legislature respect the newly-elected Democratic governor and put a stop to what is being called a coup.
Despite winning major victories at the national level and across the country, North Carolina’s Republican-dominated government is doing everything it can to shrink the powers of the incoming Democratic governor.
Always the sore losers, the Republican lawmakers in the state are attempting to use the same sneaky tactics used to push through the infamous Bathroom bill, by not giving the public enough time to react as they make massive changes to the state’s government.
The changes Republicans are rushing through the legislature include an effort to reduce the number of state employees Cooper can hire and fire and fire from 1,500 to a mere 300.
They would also like to strip the governor of the power to appoint trustees to the University of North Carolina and give it to the General Assembly, and require Senate confirmation for Cabinet appointments. Additionally, they want to hand the power of a state office from the governor to the lieutenant governor – a Republican.
In response to this, Governor-elect Roy Cooper has threatened to sue, and protesters stormed the capitol to demand that Cooper’s win be respected.
Protesters sang, “We Shall Not Be Moved,” and attempted to disrupt the ongoing state Senate session.
Though the Republican crooks will no doubt continue their criminal coup of their state’s government, the people have made their voices heard once more. We only hope the protests continue until Cooper is given the power and privileges he rightly earned.
