Several members and leaders of the civil rights organization NAACP have been arrested after participating in a sit-in protest at the office of Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions who is set to be confirmed as Donald Trump’s Attorney General in just a couple of weeks.
NAACP president Cornell William Brooks was among those arrested, and earlier in the day, he had posted an image of himself and other NAACP leaders on Twitter, stating that they would stay until Sessions declined to take Trump’s offer of A.G., or until they were arrested.
Though the former did not come to pass, the group were arrested and charged with second degree criminal trespass.
“In the midst of rampant voter suppression, this nominee has failed to acknowledge the reality of voter suppression while pretending to believe in the myth of voter fraud.”
The NAACP’s strong opposition to the appointment of Sessions as Attorney General is a serious one, especially considering that Sessions was once denied a federal judge position because of his dark racial past.
In 1986, then-President Ronald Reagan appointed Sessions as a federal judge, but his appointment was rejected by a Republican Senate Judiciary Committee due to his well-documented history of racialized comments and actions.
Among other racially-tinged comments, Sessions once remarked that he was a fan of the KKK until he found out they smoked pot. ha-ha, right?
Sessions is on-record disparaging the Voting Rights Act and any attempts to allow all Americans fair access to exercising their constitutional right to vote.
