Most who use social media site Twitter consider it to be a place which shows off the best and worst of humanity, but for many, what happens on Twitter isn’t just a matter of entertainment, but of vital national security.
Which is why in South Korea, the government has installed a new political position, Twitter Officer, whose sole job is keeping an eye on President-elect Trump’s Twitter account in fear that he may antagonize their nation or their rival North Korea into taking violent action.
Officially, the position will also watch Trump’s twitter for key insights into his foreign policy plans as are unrelated to the Koreas – such as when he attacks China for aiding North Korea.
Their fear is not unwarranted.
Already, Trump has lashed out at North Korea more than once, calling for the U.S. to take action against the nation for their attempts at creating weapons to use against the U.S. Despite having previously praised North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during the election, Trump has made it clear that he is not afraid to take direct action against the nation.
South Korea of course has a major stake in whether or not conflict escalates against its northern neighbor and rival.
The nation already is dealing with major political upheaval as the former South Korean president was recently impeached thanks to millions of protesters speaking out against her leadership.
Now, as the nation struggles to redefine their government, they must also watch anxiously to see if Trump will topple everything in a few characters.
