Though it is not slated for release until somewhere around the end of Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office, information has been revealed about the Trump Administration’s planned cuts to government programs, and the losses are set to be astounding.
While small government Republicans will rejoice, the clear message from the Trump administration is that science, humanities, and caring for the needy are no longer the government’s problem.
One of the most traumatic cuts planned by the GOP is to vital programs associated with the Violence Against Women Act. The Trump budget blueprint says that the Department of Justice’s Violence Against Women Grants will be gutted, along with several other DoJ programs.
Currently, the DoJ supports 25 grants associated with the Violence Against Women act, including programs for battered women and children of abuse.
These grants provide legal services to victims of domestic violence, and allow special attention to be paid to native american victims of violence, elderly victims of violence, rural victims of violence and more. Without these programs, the avenues for battered men and women – especially low-income and minority – are dramatically diminished.
Considering how anti-Women the Trump Administration has already proved itself to be, this is just another slap in the face to women nationwide.
In addition to dramatic cuts to the Department of Energy, the State Department will likely end all climate change agreements made in Paris.
“The departments of Commerce and Energy would see major reductions in funding, with programs under their jurisdiction either being eliminated or transferred to other agencies. The departments of Transportation, Justice and State would see significant cuts and program eliminations.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting would be privatized, while the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities would be eliminated entirely.”
The budget cuts are being made with the hope that they can avoid cutting Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, promises made by Donald Trump on the campaign trail. But getting the budget down to Republican standards without cutting into entitlement programs is proving a challenge.
