… and that he figured many Republicans felt the same way.
Speaking with Rachel Maddow in the wake of the confirmation of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described how he felt, and what he thought that many Republicans who voted to confirm Sessions might be feeling as well.
Schumer told Maddow that hearing Sessions’ confirmation made his “stomach turn,” and that he believed he was not the only one.
“When Sessions was passed it turned my stomach. I don’t have anything against him personally . . . but to have a man like this, his record, he’s probably, almost certainly the most anti-immigrant senator of the hundred. On civil rights and voting rights, he’s probably top three or four. . . he doesn’t belong there, and I think a lot of Republicans know it.”
So what does Schumer think those Republicans could be thinking to vote against their deep, true beliefs?
“What’s happened on the Republican side, even though many of them have doubts about these nominees, they’re afraid to break with Donald Trump. They’re marching in lockstep on these nominees and on so many other things.”
Ah of course.
That is exactly why, despite how much they clearly hated Trump in the early primaries, we have not heard a peep from any of the former RNC leadership. Paul Ryan hasn’t said a word against Trump and Reince Priebus is too excited about his promotion to ever let it slip that he dislikes the man.
Meanwhile, we are hearing signs of dissent from rampant leaks coming from inside the white house, but the more prestigious voices around Trump like John McCain may speak out against some of Trump’s actions while still confirming each and every one of Trump’s unqualified cabinet picks.
The roads of hate, death and fear are paved with people who were just “doing their job,” and these Republicans will certainly find their place in history the same way.
