If you feel like the Democratic party seems to spend more time navel gazing than opposing Trump, you are not along.
A newly released poll from the Pew Research Center found that a whopping 72% of respondents who identified as Democrats or Democrat-leaning said that they feared the Democratic party would not do enough to oppose Trump.
A shocking majority of Democrats seem all to aware of just how feckless and action-less the Democratic party is being in the face of unprecedented control, overreach, and misconduct from the Trump administration.
The poll showed that 20 percent of Democrats and Democrat-leaners also felt that Democrats might go “too far” in opposing Trump, with eight percent going with “Don’t know.” Notably, the poll did not allow respondents to choose “just opposing enough,” so we can’t really know how many party members are comfortable with the current Democratic plan against Trump.
Also notable is the language chosen for the poll question – respondents weren’t asked to reflect on current actions by the Democratic party, or on past action, but on possible future action – preying on respondents’ anxieties about the future.
The Democratic party would do well to pay attention to this poll, as well as paying closer attention to their constituents. We may be spending most of our time criticizing the Republican Administration, but if we ever hope to regain the White House, Congress, or the Senate again, those in office must pay heed to their constituency and earn their next vote.
