On Tuesday, former Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters that former President Barack Obama will be jumping back into politics. Holder says that Obama, “will be a more visible part of the effort,” to champion Democratic interests in the fight against unfair redistricting, according to a Politico piece.
Holder was asked by Obama to the chair of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee and now Holder is recruiting the former President to assist in their fight. Democrats claim that Republicans unfairly redrew district lines following the 2010 census.
“He’s ready to roll,” Holder said.
Aside from being the most prominent figure in the newly-formed organization, Holder said that Obama will assist in fundraising and working with state legislators. The NDRC is looking to focus efforts into winning key state-level elections in order to push efforts to put Democrats in a more favorable position in future U.S. House of Representative races. According to the article by Politico, the NDRC is driven by,
“statistics that showed Republicans winning 49 percent of the vote in those elections but getting 55 percent of the seats in the 2016 elections.”
Along with trying to win select state races, the NDRC’s website also details plans to be more aggressive in legal battles and ballot initiatives to “undo GOP gerrymandering and reshape the 2021 maps.”
