Not for the first time, a GOP official has been charged with voter fraud, a rare crime that he spent much of his time advocating against.

Former leader of the Colorado Republican Party Steve Curtis was arrested in February of this year for committing voter fraud during the 2016 presidential election when he forged and mailed in his ex-wife’s ballot.

Curtis, who spent much of his time railing on voter fraud, a common tactic by the GOP, reportedly once said on his radio program that “virtually every case of voter fraud I can remember in my lifetime was committed by Democrats.”

Curtis’s ex-wife Kelly Curtis said that she was outraged when her ex-husband forged her ballot. Curtis discovered the forgery when she called her local elections office asking how she could vote since she had recently moved. It was then that she was told her ballot had already been cast by mail.

“It was demeaning and presumptuous, and I had no idea what would go on in someone’s mind to cast my ballot for me illegally, actually to go to all the trouble to forge my ballot.”

Interestingly, though Curtis claims voter fraud is committed by Democrats, every instance I can think of in the past couple of years came from Republicans who either forged mail-in ballots or sought to prove that they could game the system. In fact, arrest records are peppered with instances in which Republicans thought they could expose flaws in the election system and got themselves arrested instead.

So when Republicans continue to perpetuate the false idea that voter fraud is a massive issue that must be curbed by even more legislation, remember that these officials likely aren’t acting from a place of goodwill, but rather from guilt.
