The CBO has finally had the chance to look through the Republicans’ American Healthcare Act, and the results are not good for the GOP. The analysis shows that 14 million people will lose health insurance in the next 18 months, and 24 million will lose their coverage in the years following 2018. When the Republicans unveiled the American Healthcare Act, they did it before the Congressional budget office had a chance to go through it and give their analysis of how much it would cost, how many people would lose their health insurance, and what the overall effect of this piece of legislation would be. The reason the Republicans do that is because they were pretty sure the CBO was going to come out with some bad news for them. Well, the CBO’s gotten their hands on it and they did come out yesterday afternoon with some really bad news for the Republican party.
The worst news is that by the year 2018, 14 million people in the United States will have lost their healthcare coverage as a result of repealing Obamacare and replacing it with Trumpcare. Furthermore, by the year 2026, a total of 24 million people in the United States will have lost their healthcare under Trumpcare. That means that all of the gains we made in six seven years of Obamacare will have been completely erased by this Republican healthcare plan. Furthermore, the older you get, the worst your situation will be under the American Healthcare Act or Trumpcare, Ryancare, whatever you want to call it.
Here’s why. It’s going to do away with the majority of the subsidies that Obamacare had, but if you’re a young person, say 21 years old and you make a ridiculous salary, guess what? You are going to pay less. Good for you. Unfortunately, the salaries that they’re talking about really aren’t seen by any 21 year old in the United States today. If you’re a senior citizen, 64 or over and you’re still making more than $70,000 a year, again a very tiny demographic, your rates will also go down by about $700 a year, by the year 2026. Not bad. You get to save maybe upwards of $700 in nine years. Hey, at least it’s something, right?
Overall, the CBO shows that this Republican healthcare plan is a disaster. It doesn’t work economically. It doesn’t work in terms of getting people covered under health insurance. If I can just maybe simplify everything the CBO said, maybe just spell it out in plain letters. The Republican healthcare plan is stupid and deadly.
