With most of the media’s attention focused on the latest Donald Trump scandal of the day, we have to remember that Republicans in both the House and Senate are working to destroy healthcare, destroy the environment, and create an even larger gap between the wealthy and the other 99%. We have to keep these issues in the spotlight. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.

If you’ve tuned into the corporate controlled media anytime recently, you have undoubtedly, even on Fox News, seen stories about Donald Trump, the firing of James Comey, the leak of classified information to the Russians. This, that, and the other thing. Anything Donald Trump has done. The $100 billion arms deal he’s working with Saudi Arabia. All horrible things that this man has done, no doubt, and they do deserve coverage.
However, when was the last time you saw a good 10, 15 minute segment devoted to Paul Ryan’s crusade to destroy the American health care system? Or, to the House Science Committee’s crusade to do away with science at the EPA and the FDA? Or, the Senate working on similar bills to do away with all scientific research within the EPA? We have a Republican-controlled House and a Republican-controlled Senate that are working around the clock to destroy some of the best things about this country, trying to make things worse, trying to give the wealthy elite another massive tax break. But you’re not hearing about these things because Donald Trump tweeted something stupid or because Donald Trump leaked classified information.
Again, these things have to be taken seriously and they need coverage, but we can’t forget the fact that Republicans control all of the branches of the government right now. The House and Senate, especially, are enjoying the fact that they have an idiot president or a know-nothing president, who will get coverage no matter what. They’re using that as cover. Now, they can go back to their chambers, write this horrible legislation that could kick 24 million people off of their health insurance or create an even larger gap in income between the haves and the have-nots, make income inequality far worse in this country, prevent the EPA from effectively being able to use science, same thing with the FDA, give massive giveaways to big pharma, to the fossil fuel industry in the form of subsidies, all while everyone focuses on Donald Trump.
What I’m trying to say here is that, yes, while we have to talk about what Donald Trump is doing, he’s the President and the most powerful person in the world, allegedly, but we also have to focus on what Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, and all of those Republicans in the House and Senate are trying to do to this country because that’s where the real damage is going to come from. Donald Trump can tweet whatever he wants, he can get out there, make these horrible accusations against people. But at the end of the day, the people really working to destroy everything that the Democrats and Obama and progressives and progressive initiatives at the state level have accomplished, the people trying to destroy that are the Republicans in the House and Senate and they deserve just as much, if not more, attention than the media is giving to Donald Trump.
