Whenever a Trump scandal erupts, there have been plenty of Trump surrogates and supporters willing to hop in front of a camera to defend the President. But after the Comey Memo bombshell dropped, media outlets struggled to find anyone at all willing to come on TV and defend the President. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.
Transcript of the above video:
On Tuesday evening, as new broke that James Comey had a memo saying that Donald Trump wanted him to end the Michael Flynn investigation, news outlets and producers all over this country were scrambling to find Republicans willing to come on their program and either defend the president or at least even just talk about what was happening in the world today. After all, this was one of the biggest stories we’ve had since Donald Trump took office. Here’s the funny thing, they couldn’t find Republicans willing to come on their shows and talk about what was happening. CNN, MSNBC, even Fox News could not find Republicans willing to come on to talk about this issue.
They were, finally, able to get Adam Kinzinger, Republican Representative, and Marco Rubio. Kinzinger who said, “Look, uh, we need a special commission to investigate this. This is kinda getting out of hand.” Rubio, he said, “We just need to know what the facts are.” Neither of them would come directly out and defend Donald Trump. Both of them kind of wishy washy about the fact that, “Yeah, golly, I guess we gotta, you know, look into this. Seems like it’s probably a big deal that people are going to get upset about.”
What’s funny about this is that, last week, after Trump fired James Comey as FBI director, you couldn’t stop Republicans from going on TV and defending the president’s decision. Every single segment on Fox News was a different Republican lined up out the building just waiting to get on there and talk about the fact that, “I thought Democrats hated James Comey. This is good.” Next up, here you go, say the same thing. Kellyanne Conway, Sean Spicer, hiding in the bushes, at least he talked to people, but not anymore.
That’s what’s so nice. We finally are seeing Republicans say, “Look, enough is enough. I have my subpoena pen ready. We’ve gotta find out what happened. We’ve gotta find out if there’s obstruction of justice. We have to find out what the president did, when he did it, and why he did it.” Finally. I mean, it took a little over 100 days, but we got there. Some of them more sincere about it than others. I’m sure most Republicans in office would be more than happy to just sit back and let Donald Trump continue destroying the reputation of the presidency, but they’re not, at least on the surface.
Now, what happens behind closed doors is a completely different matter. For Republicans, if they were to come out and support some kind of impeachment, some kind of special prosecutor looking into all this, they could emerge as the heroes in the situation, recognizing that they have a cancer within their party and then doing their part to remove that cancer, instead of sitting back and letting it take over their entire party. They could stand up and be the heroes here, but they don’t have the guts to do it. Now, they’re playing second fiddle to the Democrats who are foaming at the mouth to start with impeachment proceedings, and a majority of the American public supports it. By a seven point margin, more people support impeaching the president than not impeaching the president.
The Democratic Party jumped on that and they’re now in the lead. Republicans could have, not that I want them to take the lead, I would love the Democrats to do this and get the credit for it, but it’s just funny because I have been warning them. I’ve been saying this. Somebody could’ve emerged as the savior of the Republican Party, but none of them had the brains or the courage to do it. Now, they don’t even have the courage to go in the media, get in front of a camera, and talk about what’s happening. They’re running and hiding because they don’t know what to do.
My advice to Republicans in Washington DC, since you don’t know what to do, let me tell you, stand up and do the right thing, not for your party, but for the country. Donald Trump is destroying the office of the presidency and even you can’t deny that anymore. So, step up and get behind the idea that maybe it’s time we look into impeachment, or at the very least, we get some kind of special prosecutor in there, and we find out what in the hell is going on.
