Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has called for all the Jews of Europe to make a mass migration to Israel, reported The Guardian.
“This wave of terror attacks can be expected to continue, including antisemitic and murderous attacks,” said Netanyahu after the Copenhagen attacks. “We say to the Jews, to our brothers and sisters, Israel is your home and that of every Jew. Israel is waiting for you with open arms.”
As the Guardian noted, Netanyahu’s announcement “echoed remarks he made after the Paris attacks on Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket in January.” Netanyahu was noted by French Prime Minister Manuel Valls to have made the comments during an election campaign. Other French officials note the comments’ danger.
French President Francois Hollande said he does not want people to think that “Jews no longer have a place in Europe.” Hollande continued in saying “Jews have their place in Europe and, in particular, in France.”
Netanyahu is in danger of creating a sense of alienation among the Jewish people of Europe with such statements. However, that’s not the case being that many European countries, namely France and Germany, welcome the Jewish community and want to keep them in their country.
“We are glad and thankful that there is Jewish life in Germany Again,” said German chancellor Angela Merkel. “And we would like to continue living well together with the Jews who are in Germany today.”
Even Jewish religious leaders have questioned the words of PM Netanyahu, most notably was Jair Melchior, Denmark’s chief rabbi.
“Terror is not a reason to move to Israel,” said Melchior. “People from Denmark move to Israel because they love Israel, because of Zionism but not because of terrorism. If the way we deal with terror is to run somewhere else, we should all run to a deserted island.”
Netanyahu seems to have forgotten how much the developed, European world has embraced the Jewish community. European state officials and Jewish leaders have all disagreed with Netanyahu’s over-the-top solution.
