A recent piece on the 700 Club touted Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio as a good Christian because of his homophobic views on gay marriage, Right Wing Watch reported. In fact, host Pat Robertson called Rubio “the Democrats’ worst nightmare.”
Regarding gay marriage, Rubio has called it “a real and present danger.”
“We are at the water’s edge of the argument that mainstream Christian teaching is hate speech because today we’ve reached the point in our society where if you do not support same-sex marriage, you are labeled a homophobe and a hater. So what’s the next step after that? After they’re done going after individuals, the next step is to argue that the teachings of mainstream Christianity, the catechism of the Catholic Church, is hate speech. That’s a real and present danger.”
What the piece left out, though, was Rubio’s tendency to use Florida’s GOP credit card to pay for personal expenses while serving in the State House of Representatives. Records show that Rubio paid for groceries, repairs to the family car, lumber, and computer equipment with the party funds.
There were several instances of Rubio also using the card to purchase plane tickets for his wife to accompany him on official functions. However, she did not travel with him on more than one occasion, and Rubio was credited for the unused tickets by the airlines.
From 2006 to 2008, Rubio put over $100,000 worth of charges on the card, which is to be used only for business expenses — not groceries and liquor for himself. The IRS gives political parties tax-exempt status but requires that donations go toward elections.
The fact that Rubio used party funds to cover personal expenses shows just how easily unethical behavior comes to him. Not exactly the type of stand-up Christian the 700 Club made him out to be.
