The Confederate flag represents racism, oppression, and the degradation of black bodies in America. It does not, as many of its supporters would want you to think, represent heritage over hate.
It’s insidious for groups to tout out their few black supporters as though that legitimizes their hateful symbol. For them, the flag seems to be akin to quasi-hyper patriotism and they ignore any of the real history or legacy of the flags use and representation of hate-filled groups.
The young man in this video is one such misled youth who seems to think that just because the people he knows aren’t racist, that must mean the flag itself doesn’t represent racism.
