Thursday night, a police dog died after being left in a hot car by his handler in Conyers, Georgia.
The dogs name was Zane and he was a 5-year-old bloodhound. He has worked with police nearly his entire life. He was found dead in the vehicle of his handler, Jerahmy Williams, around 5 p.m.
According to Williams, he came home and went to bed because he felt ill. He claimed to have been under the impression that he had taken Zane to a kennel.
Williams and Zane have worked together for nearly the entirety of both’s careers with the Conyers police.
Officer Williams is current on administrative leave with pay. Pending the results of an investigation, he could be charged with animal abuse and reckless conduct.
“We are committed to the care and proper treatment of our working K9s. We are mourning the loss of our own,” said chief Gene Wilson.
