After failing to rule out the possibility of using federal officers to deny women access to abortion treatment, Mike Huckabee says that a 10-year-old girl raped by her stepfather was rightly kept from having an abortion.

On CNN’s State of the Union, Huckabee discussed Paraguay’s decision to deny an abortion for a 10-year-old girl whom had been raped by her stepfather. She gave birth last week, and Huckabee contends that keeping her from having an abortion has prevented a second tragedy.

“Let nobody be misled, a 10-year-old girl being raped is horrible, but does it solve a problem by taking the life of an innocent child?” asked Huckabee. “When I think about one horror, I also think about the possibilities that exist and I just don’t want to think that somehow we discounted a human life … Let’s not compound the tragedy by taking yet another life.”

In Paraguay, access to an abortion is limited to instances where the procedure is deemed necessary to save the woman’s life.
