Consumer-brand flamethrowers are on the market, and very few states have laws against them. The town of Warren, Michigan is pushing for the first high-profile, direct ban of commercial-grade, consumer flamethrowers.

Creator Chris Byars constructed and is selling the XM42 model flamethrower, which retails at $899. The XM42 flamethrower can propel a blazing stream of napalm-like fuel approximately 25 feet. Byars is pitching the flamethrower as a practical tool when it’s really a dangerous adult plaything.

With all the mass shootings and gun-related accidental deaths in America, creating and selling a flamethrower for the consumer market seems like a terrible idea.
