A recent poll has found that nearly half of Republicans doubt President Obama’s faith. It’s sound confirmation of what many observing the political landscape have been saying for some time: The divide between conservatives and progressives has never been so large.
The poll found that 43% of Republicans, and 54% of Donald Trump supporters, believe that Barack Obama is a Muslim.
It makes sense that the largest divide is found among Donald Trump supporters. Trump’s brand of racism and bigotry is a comfortable home for racists and fearful people. It’s also a perfect place for people who care more for their preconceived notions than facts. So no matter how many times they are told that Barack Obama is a Protestant who attend church regularly, they will go with their gut feeling that he’s a Muslim who is secretly trying to overthrow the United States government on behalf of the Middle East.
