Jeb Bush thinks he’s an appealing candidate for African American communities. Speaking at the East Cooper Republican Women’s Club Annual Shrimp Dinner, Bush tried to make the case that his policies were appealing to African Americans, while at the same time insulting them.
“Our message is one of hope and aspiration,” said Bush. “It isn’t one of division and get in line and we’ll take care of you with free stuff. Our message is one that is uplifting – that says you can achieve earned success.”
Republicans have been aware that they do a poor job communicating with minority communities for a long time. Yet, they continue to patronize and fail to seriously engage with those communities. Instead, politicians like Jeb Bush, and before him Mitt Romney, will try to make the case that if welfare programs exist, African Americans cannot help themselves but to take advantage of them.
It’s a pathetic argument and one that has repeatedly failed to connect Republicans with minority communities.
